Slippery Creatures by K. J. Charles
Saturday, 7 January 2023 16:05 ...am I just incredibly sheltered? I just finished a very lovely, very queer audiobook with explicit gay sex that I would not have expected to find outside fan fiction in book that I checked out from the library. Not complaining. So very not complaining. Just surprised.
The book's protagonist is Will Darling. He is a young man who came back from World War I to find that his mother had died of the Spanish flu. There were no jobs, not even for war heroes. There were far more war heroes than jobs to go around. The descriptions of poverty and how that makes every little thing so much more difficult resonated strongly. Will reaches out to a long lost uncle who owns a bookshop. He cares for the old man in his final days and inherits the shop.
Then, a strange person comes around and gives up a code word in exchange for information. Will does not know what the man is talking about and the adventure begins. The book is an enjoyable romp.
Hearing Cornell Collins narrate the more intimate scenes of the books in what sounds to me like a posh accent had me wanting to hide giggles behind my hand. I enjoyed the way Collins switched to a Northern English dialect for Will's dialog.
