Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian
Friday, 3 February 2023 19:25Believe it or not, I never really got into romance novels before last month. But the last few months have been hard. I randomly found one of Cat Sebastian's romance novels and fell in love with her style. The motto at the top of her webpage is "fall in love, eat the rich" and that point of view appeals to me. Also, while I fully plan on reading things other than romance someday, for now I am enjoying the promise of a happily ever after that romance novels offer. Moreover, I love the lgbtq+ representation in the books I'm reading.
Alright. So, this book specifically.
The first time I checked this book out, I sent it back without finishing it. I took an immediate dislike to one of the main characters and there were other Cat Sebastian books to try. Now, I have completed most of the other books and that made me give this one a try.
This book is advertised as "charming nonbinary servant on a long con/grumpy bespectacled aristocrat" and "seduction by reading Gothic novels aloud." That seems like a fair summary.
Robert/Charity/Robin is the nonbinary character and I loved her from the beginning. (The book uses she/her pronouns for Robin, so that is what I will use here.) Alistair, Marquess of Pembrook, was the character that I did not enjoy at first. However, I think he became more likeable by the end of the book.
Both characters sometimes behaved in ways that I did not understand. There was a discrepancy between their motivations and their actions. There was enough that enjoyed about the book to make me tolerate the things that seemed contrived or did not make sense.
Also, this book was written in 2018. I feel like most of the books by the author have been better than this. So, maybe the writer has simply improved. That gives me hope for my own writing.
